DJ DIONE IN LOS ANGELES

Some time ago I was invited to dj at a hardcore party called ‘Headstrong 5’ near Los Angeles (USA) organised by H2OH recordings, which was to take place on Saturday the 9th of April.

So Friday the 8th of April I went on a plane for a long and tiresome flight to sunny California.Ofcourse when I arrived there,i was selected for a cross-exam and an extended luggage-check by the U.S. customs, but luckily they let me in the country. After I got through customs, my excellent American hosts, Omar Santana and Deborah (who run H2OH) were already waiting. After a short heavy lunch/dinner they brought me to my hotel where I soon fell into a coma, exausted from the trip and the jetlag from the 9 hours time-difference.

The next day I was picked up by Paul (Dj Eon) and his mate Scott. We did a little tour through L.A. and went to Paul’s house, where we hung out in his hardcore-garage. Then we went back to the hotel to pick up Dj Delirium, and on our way they broke into Omar’s house to pick up a mixer he needed for the party (don’t ask...).

Then, finally it was time to go to the party. I had no idea what to expect. The organisation was stressed because the location had to be changed at the last moment, which meant they could only have 2 areas instead of 3. Also because in the U.S. hardcore isn’t nearly as popular as it is here in Holland, most hardcore-parties only draw a few people. On top of that the party was in San Bernardino which is about an hour from L.A. by car, and there hadn’t been a ‘Headstrong’ party in a long time.

But luckily when I arrived at the party the club was completely filled with people. It was a club with 2 areas inside and a chill-out room outside, which was a good thing because you could go there to escape from the heat. (what else do you expect with such nice weather and so many hardcore-heads inside). The sound was okay and clear, although I would have liked it to be a little louder. The crowd was very different from the crowd over here, there were all kinds of people, from Gothics and Candy-ravers to sexy babes and Hip-hoppers. Thetyle of dancing was as varied as the crowd.

I had to play at 01.00 in the main area after Omar Santana, who already started to get the people dancing like crazy. While he was playing the music suddenly stopped because the amplifiers overheated, a problem that would continue throughout the whole night. lso the records skipped a lot, because the wildly dancing people kept bumping into the dj-booth.That scared me a little because I had to play next, right as my jet-lag started to kick in again.

But anyway,a little later than planned I started to spin and very soon the crowd went berzerk. There was a row of people cheering right in front of me. With every new record the hands went in the air and with the popular tracks ( ‘Pain ‘til I die’,’Born 2 raise hell’ and ‘Come here and die’ for example) they screamed along with the music. All the time the dancefloor was full and the crowd kept on dancing even with the newer and less known records I played. What an excellent crowd. I didn’t have the chance to mix properly because the records skipped regularly, but that didn’t seem to matter at all.I even had a few drop-outs because of the overheated amps ,but that only seemed to get them even crazier, because as soon as the music returned they all started dancing again with new energy, while screaming their lungs out. It was a really cool party to play at,with a constantly enthousiastic crowd. I wish the people were as party-minded as this everywhere.

After me it was Dj Delirium’s time to spin, he also got the people crazy. In the meanwhile a lot of people came to congratulate me for my set, and I chatted a while with a few people. Also I had a look in the other area where they played techno and hardhouse, which was also filled with party-minded people and had a great atmosphere.

At 4 o’clock the party ended, after Dj Eon got the people crazy with a lot of old and fast hardcore. It was great to see how many people stayed ‘til the end. The party was a big succes, around 600 to 800 visitors, which is really a lot for L.A. And completely no fights or other problems.Just the way a party is supposed to be.

The next day I went to Omar’s house where we chilled in his garden with other dj’s and listened to some new music in his studio, while enjoying a nice fat American pizza.

On Monday ,Omar and Deborah took me to Venice Beach, Melrose, Beverley Hills and Hollywood where we went shopping and basically behaved like real . All this under a clear blue sky and a temperature around 25 degrees Celsius. What a hard life we dj’s have sometimes.

Sadly, all good things come to an end and so on Tuesday I was dropped off at the airport, after a large breakfast (In the States everything is bigger, so no exception for breakfasts). After another long and tiresome flight I arrived back in Holland on Wednesday afternoon, because of the time-difference.

So in conclusion : It was tiresome but very much worth the long trip. The hardcore crowd over there is just super, the food and the weather excellent.I just hope the hardcore-scene in the U.S.A. will grow and i’m looking forward to my next visit.

But first I have some other nice trips ahead ; In May for example I have gigs in Switzerland, Spain, Italy and Russia (Moscow).Yeehaa.....

Dione a.k.a. E-Noid.
